What is an AFIS

The Automated Fingerprint Identification System, more commonly known as AFIS, is a type of biometric system that uses digital imaging to capture a fingerprint, which then can then be compared to a database of fingerprint records to help determine the identity of an individual. The AFIS is a biometric system commonly used both in law enforcement and in the application of international travel procedures. The AFIS is currently one of the main security systems used around the world to identify people who may have had criminal records in the past, or to identify them as the true owners of any identification document they may be carrying.
